A new study has found that anger on social media such as Facebook or Twitter is the fastest spreading emotion. This should not surprise anyone. Anger and fear are similar and very powerful motivators. Just think back how you felt when you mom screamed: “wait ’til your father gets home!!”
Scientists from Beihang University in China studied 200,000 users on a popular social network in that country called Weibo (similar to Twitter). They looked at over 70 million updates and found that not only did anger spread faster but it spread wider across the network.
The emotions expressed on social media were split into four groups: sadness, anger, joy and disgust. Updates that were expressing disgust or sadness were the least likely to spread and joy was most likely to be spread among friends and close connections.
This research is important to any company who has a social network marketing group because it suggests that customers who are angry with the company or service are most likely to share their updates. A company that’s savvy about social networks should make an effort to address these angry customers before their comments turn into a lava flow of vitriol.
So, what the heck does this research have to do with hunting and fishing? Not much, really except for the fact that The Outpost Magazine has a very active social media program which includes Facebook, Twitter and even Pinterest.
Since I’m responsible for managing the social networks of The Outpost Magazine, I read this research from China and quietly nodded my head. After a few minutes, a little light clicked on. It occurred to me that men and women who are outdoor sports enthusiasts have their own unique set of quirks related to social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Maybe those Chinese brainiacs would be interested in the bizarre behavior I have noticed with the Outpost Facebook page.
First off, you might be surprised to learn we post at least once every day and most days, twice every day, seven days a week. Take it from someone who has to come up with most of these little slices of life, that’s a LOT of posts!
Here are some things I’ve learned about people who love to hunt, fish, hike, bike and laugh. BTW (as we social network hipsters like to say), if you know anyone at Beihang University, please tell them I’m available to offer them my insights.
